Writing for the Web: get more readers

If you’re a freelance writer, and you’re excited about writing for the Web, welcome to a new world. When you write for the Web, you can not only write about what interests you (whatever your interests, thousands of others share them), but you can get many more readers than you get when you write for print publication.

Your writing lives longer on the Web

When you write for magazines, your writing lives on the newsstand for a month. Over the years archive copies of magazines become brittle and fall apart. On the Web, your writing is accessible year after year.

Here’s what Dave Winer wrote about writing for the Web back in 2001:

What if you’re a freelancer, you sold a piece on wireless computing, and that’s it, but what are you supposed to do with the knowledge you’ve accumulated as the market you wrote about is developing? …

… you can take the power into your own hands, start writing for the the Web, and see what comes back to you. These days a column on the Web can get more readership than one in print. Once you’ve had a taste for this style of writing, if writing is what you do, you’ll never want to go back.

Web writing is powerful and creative.

No one tells you what to write on the Web. You can write about whatever interests you. If your writing is intriguing, you’ll get readers. And when you get readers, you get paid.

In 2007, a lot has changed in writing for the Web. In 2007 blogs have gone mainstream. Everyone knows about the power of blogging, and instant publication.

Many freelance writers however have yet to discover the powerful new opportunities writing for the Web brings them.
