Web writing - it’s all in the title tag
Friday, October 10th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedAs a Web writer, you need to learn everything you can about how basic search engine optimization (SEO) works. Most of your clients will be clueless. They’re in the dark ages, still believing the old “keyword density” silliness.
Whenever I write a Web page, I start with writing:
Page Title
Page Description
Keywords
I’ve got a little macro in TextMate (my Mac text editor of choice) which spits them out, ready for me to fill in.
Think of the Page Title and the Page Description as being advertisements for the page. When someone searches, the title and description of the pages show up in the search results. If your title and description are enticing enough, they’ll click.
A tip: your client will want to get his company name in the page title. However, unless the company is well known enough that people will be searching for it by name, this is not a good idea.
10 SEO and Marketing-Friendly Title Tag Formulas | Internet Marketing Strategy: Conversation Marketing recommends:
“[keyword] - [company name]. If you’re a one-product or one-service company, put the keyphrase that’s relevant to that page, then the company name, like this: Buggy Bumpers: Ian’s Buggy Emporium. Use a different phrase on each page! Repeating the same word again and again is a bad idea.”
I recommend you use your own version of my macro. It focuses your mind on the results you want, starting with getting your Web pages found.
