Web writing: do you need to know HTML?

Many writers making the switch to Web writing worry that they need to learn HTML, or other Web coding languages.

Relax. You don’t need to learn coding.

However, a basic knowledge of HTML and FTP does help, because it means that you can make changes to Web sites after you’ve written the pages, when the pages are online. If you spot a minor change that you want to make to a page’s text, it’s much easier to do it yourself, than to ask the “Web guy/ gal” to do it. Basic Web know-how is also useful for creating your own sites.

So if Web writing appeals to you, add some basic Web knowledge to your skill set. This knowledge will stand you in good stead for years to come. It also means that you can accept project management gigs - which pay more than straight Web writing.
