Web writing: do you need to know how to create Web sites?

Many writers are nervous about writing for the Web.

Here’s a typical question, usually asked in a highly nervous tone: “Do I have to create Web sites? I just want to write!”

The short answer to the question is: “No, of course you don’t have to create Web sites. When you’re writing content for someone else, Web writers write only content and copy, and you don’t need to worry about graphics or Web design.”

The longer answer is somewhat more complicated. “No, you just write… but if you want to make money online out of your own words, then you’ll learn how to create your own sites and blogs. Because when you do, you will keep making money from your own words for years. If you just focus on selling Web content and copy to others, you’re working under a Work For Hire agreement, which means you lose all rights to the work - you’ve been paid, and that’s it.”

No, you don’t need to create Web sites. But if you’re aiming to develop a profitable writing career, you will. Otherwise, you’re reduced to selling your time. Everyone has a limited amount of time available, and while selling your time is OK when you’re starting out, it makes much less sense when you’re experienced.

If you’re nervous about creating sites, start off with blogs. Read my ebook Blogging for Dollars, and its accompanying blog, the Blogging for Dollars blog.

I should add, that creating YOUR OWN sites and blogs is not only more profitable, it’s way more fun too. On my own sites, I can write what I want, when I want… and I can try out new creative ideas. So in addition to money, the big benefit of your own venues is creative freedom.
