Web writing: casual style? Not always

Writing for the Web is very different from writing for print. You need shorter sentences, active verbs, and most of all, you need to get to the point. Writing on blogs, Web pages and wikis also tends to be more casual than writing for print, but not always.

Who’s the client’s audience?

When you’re working with a new client, review the client’s current site, and his competitors’ sites too. You need to get a sense of the client’s audience. A plumber will have an audience which speaks and responds differently than a mortgage lender, for example.

Remember the audience as you write. Get into their mind set, and their way of thinking. This may mean that you write more formally than you usually would for a Web site.

Get up to speed on how to write for Web sites of many different types with my ebook, Writing For The Web.
