I’ve written about keywords and their importance in Web writing in several posts on this blog.
Using the right keywords is vital in every piece of Web writing you do, whether it’s content for a Web site, an article, or a news release. You need to be aware of the keywords that Web searchers use, otherwise your writing won’t be found. There are millions of Web sites, with billions of pages - keywords ensure that when people are searching for information, they find your writing.
It’s easy to make mistakes when working with keywords. For example, my writing blog was a couple of years old before I realized that I should include “freelance” in my keywords for the site. I missed out on a lot of traffic because I hadn’t used that word. I didn’t use it because I don’t like the term. However, searchers use the term, and it was silly of me not to use it. It’s very easy to let your own prejudices and ideas of what the keywords for a site should be, rather than to discover what keywords searchers actually use.
While many keyword research tools are free, others are chargeable. I use several software programs, and also a couple of Web sites. When I’m writing for someone else, I include keyword research in the quote, and you should too.
Because keywords and the search engines are such a vital part of Web writing, the more you learn about search engines, the better. Search Engine Land is one of my favorite sites for staying up to date with the search engines.
