Web links: remember to link in your writing
Friday, January 11th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedLinks are the currency of the Web and in a real sense, links ARE the Web.
In » Greedy Bastards at The New York Times John Andrews outs stingy linking behavior at the NYT:
“Actually, there are a few links in the article… but they are self referencing spam links with anchor text ‘Google’ and ‘iPod’. What are those for, eh New York Times SEO Team? Gimme a break. The Neuros guys provided the great content and opportunity for your publication to look good in front of viewers, and you don’t even provide a website address or link. Greedy Bastards, plain and simple.”
I can see why the NYT didn’t link: a link would turn the article into a free ad.
However that policy should be trumped by consideration for their readers. Sending readers to internal links is just sly and sneaky, not to mention cheap.
So when and how should you link?
In your Web writing, link when it’s appropriate to do so. If you’re writing Web content for a client, the client may not be happy with you tossing links to competitor Web sites, so ask what links he wants in the article.
On your own site, be relatively generous with links; your site’s visitors will thank you.
