As the saying goes, content is king on the Web. “Content” often means articles.

There’s a reason for this: the search engines. The more text content a Web site has, the more traffic it will get. And traffic translates into money. So sites aim to boost the number of pages they have, often via articles.

If you can consistently write articles, you can build a list of clients who look on you as their personal writer. They will pay you a retainer so that you keep them supplied with articles every month.

New writer, experienced writer, specialist writer - you can write articles and sell

Whatever level you’re at as a writer, you can write articles and sell. Of course, experienced and specialist writers make more money.

If you specialize in an area like technology, health, finance, and so on, you can charge from 50 cents to a dollar a word for your articles. The larger sites are happy to pay this, because they need the traffic.

Here’s what I wrote to someone who contacted me about article content a couple of days ago (he wanted to know how much to pay a writer for articles):

Re your topics, Pay Per Click, etc. Someone who’s knowledgeable in these areas is going to charge you at least $500 for ONE thousand word article - I know that I would. This is simply because it’s easy to get good money from large sites for these kinds of articles. So you have lots of competition from many sites for good writers.

OTOH, if you’re a new writer starting out, you’ll charge around $25 to $50 for a 500-word article. As your experience grows, you’ll be able to charge more.
