How to make money writing for the Web 1: Writing to make money online

This is the first post in a new series, on how to make money writing for the Web.

Although the series is primarily aimed at newish writers with less than five years of paid-writing experience, established writers should find it useful too.

The opportunities to make money writing online are endless, but you need to keep your wits about you, otherwise you’ll end up making much less money than you could be making. My ebook “Writing For The Web” gets you started, showing you what kinds of opportunities are available to you, and providing you with templates and much more to get yourself onto the proper footing.

In this series, we’ll cover many straightforward methods of selling your words, so even if you’re a novice writer, you’ll be able to make some money.

And speaking of which, let’s talk about the prices you charge.

Making money: you set your rates - online or off

When you’re writing for money, it’s just like any other trade. Just like plumbers, electricians, and wedding planners, you set your rates. I wish I could brand this into the consciousness of every writer, because all writers forget that this is how writing works: people pay you to write, BUT you set your rates.

This applies offline too. There’s no such thing as “standard” rates in any kind of writing. As soon as someone mentions “standard rates”, your inner BS alert system should be screeching out a warning.

Therefore, be prepared to set your own rates in all forms of Web writing. There’s lots of what I call “$2 writing” on the Web at the ultra-low end. There’s also great rates of $1 a word and (much) more at the top end of Web writing.

Just remember that you set your rates, and you’ll do fine.

In our next post in this series, we’ll talk about the easy money to be made in writing articles.
