Inevitably Web writing involves creating Web sites. If you’re a Web writer but avoid creating sites, then you’re crippled.

Of course, there are lots of free tools available, such as Blogger and Google Sites. But the best tool I’ve ever found is RapidWeaver. Unfortunately it’s only for Macs.

I switched to a Mac in 2005, and found RapidWeaver, which changed my Web writing life.

Just as RapidWeaver Showcase - Interviews - Michael Bay reports:

“It was around the time of his movie ‘The Island’ (2005) that I discovered RapidWeaver. Man, was that a breath of fresh air! No longer did I have to spend an insane amount of time updating the site. I think what sold me on RapidWeaver was it’s compact nature and it’s ease of use.”

Although I create many sites with WordPress, I create most with RapidWever. The first time I used the program I realized that it was just what I was looking for - I could now WRITE sites, rather than concerning myself with the design.

Writing sites - what’s the point of the site?

You’re a Web writer. You have a client, who wants you to write content for a site.

Before you start, you need the answer to one question: “What’s the point of the site?”

You must get the answer to that one question, because until you do, you can’t write effective copy.

Seven seconds or less

A site is made up of pages, and every page needs to relate to the primary point of the site, because you’ve got less than seven seconds to keep the site visitor on the site - the back button in the browser is just a click away.

Avoid the seduction of SEO

Search engine optimization (SEO) is seductive.

Most of your clients have heard of SEO, and they place a lot of emphasis on it. True, SEO will get visitors to a site page. But SEO won’t do any more than that. It’s up to you, the writer, to keep the visitor on the site and to get the response your client wants.

Getting the response starts with that simple question: What’s the point of the site?”
