Keywords are the foundation of writing for the Web, but unfortunately some Web writers take this too far. Suddenly their articles are all about the keywords; suddenly their articles are junk.

In my writing classes, I soft-peddle keywords for a simple reason: you’re writing for readers, not for the search engines.

Yes, keywords are important so searchers can find your articles, but blatant keyword abuse is penalized by the search engines.

Venerable article directory Ezine Articles doesn’t like keyword abuse either.

Here’s what Christopher Knight says:

FACT: 2,416 articles were not accepted in the last 30 days due to keyword/keyphrase abuse.

Remember: you’re writing for people, so watch your keywords - once in the article/ page title, and once or twice in the body of the article is enough.

Search Engine Optimization skills are vital for a Web writer. Your words will be found via the search engines, so you need to know how search engines and keywords operate.

Keywords - the words and phrases which searchers type into search query fields - help your writing to be found.

So, if you’re writing Web copy for clients, you need an effective keyword tool. I use WordTracker every day; this resource is an essential tool for me.

However, when you’re just starting your Web writing career, investing in a commercial tool is a waste of money - it will be months before you know enough about SEO to use your keyword tool effectively.

Start by using the free tools, then buy commercial tools when you’re ready.

“10 Of The Best SEO Keyword Selector Tools!” offers a good selection of tools to get you started.

Keyword-Stuffing

From Matt Cutts’s “SEO tip: Avoid keyword stuffing”.

Here’s one for your “what not to do when Web writing” file - or rather, what to warn your Web writing clients against.

Keyword-stuffing is a no-no. It will get a Web site banned from Google. If you’re working with a Web site owner, and he’s engaging in these kinds of tricks, send him this link.

But it’s the funniest example of keyword stuffing I’ve seen in a while. Read the keywords in the text area: it looks as if the guy has grabbed every keyword that gets even a little traffic and has stuffed it in there.
