In this week’s Fab Freelance Writing Ezine we discuss “flipping” Web sites. This is a completely new strategy to earn freelance income.
You can op for a fast sale, selling a brand new site for around $100, or you can let the site age, and earn considerably more. One writer sold a 15-page site for high five figures.
Here’s an excerpt from the Editorial
If you’re a new freelance writer, you have unlimited opportunities, particularly when it comes to writing for the Web. If I were starting out today, I’d focus strictly on the Web.
There are two primary reasons I’d do that:
1. All publications are moving to the Web – it’s simply cheaper, and as the technology improves and with fuel price increases, plus global warming fears, making paper products less profitable and ethical, the rush of publications to the Web will speed up; and
2. I like to get paid fast.
Fast payment is essential for freelancers, because we’re always worried about our cash flow. When you write for Web sites (or write Web sites in order to sell them, as we’re discussing in this issue), you get paid as soon as you complete the article, report, or Web site. In the print world, you can wait months for payment; this is great for magazines, but it’s a real pain for writers.
So this week our article is “Write and Flip – Create a Web Site and Sell It”, which discusses creating Web sites in order to sell them immediately, or after they’ve started making an income.

Web writing and experimentation: you’ve got to try stuff
July 11th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedBecause Web writing is such a new discipline, I get lots of questions from writers. Most of the questions can be answered with a little Web research: fire up Google, and get your answers.
Other questions are more complex. I don’t know the answer, and no one else does either, until you do a little experimentation and testing.
Therefore, when you’re a Web writer, if you want to be paid more than the minimal rates which are paid for articles, you need to become your own research and development lab.
When you do your own experiments, you will find that much of the perceived wisdom online is arrant nonsense - it’s the blind leading the blind. Because you’ve done your own experimentation, you will know what works. For now. Because the Web is constantly changing, you need to keep up with the changes.
Create your own sites and blogs so you can speak from experience
When you get writing gigs online, most of your clients are even less experienced than you are. If you’ve done your own research, you can help your clients, both to save money, and to make more money online.
For example, if you’re writing a series of articles, you will be able to help your client to integrate them into his Web site, so that the articles get leads or make sales for him, depending on what he wants them for. (Many of your clients just think they need “content”, and indeed they do, but articles simply shoveled onto a Web site won’t get the required response unless that response is designed into them.)
So, long story short, you’ve got to create your own sites and blogs, so you know what works, both for you, and for your clients. Then, you can use those sites and blogs to test and to experiment, because the more you know, the more you can charge for your services - and you will also be able to create money-making opportunities for yourself.
The Web is a huge, endless opportunity for writers. If you’re prepared to experiment, you will have success beyond your dreams.

Web writing: get your Web sites indexed more quickly
April 26th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedWhen you’re writing for the Web, the search engines are hugely important: they bring you traffic, and you (or your client), sales.
Unfortunately, it can take a while for new sites to be indexed, and to starting coming up when people type queries into the search engines’ query box. Some sites can take up to a year (longer, sometimes) to become indexed.
Blogs get indexed fast
This is where a blog is useful, because blogs often only take a few days to start appearing in the search engines.
I always suggest to clients that to speed the indexing of their site, they include a blog. When the blog has links back to the main site, the site will get traffic much more quickly.
