Writing for Money: Three Simple Ways
October 22nd, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedWant to write for money? If you’d like to start a writing business in your spare time, here are three simple forms of writing you can do.
1. Write Articles for the Web
Every Web site needs content, and articles have a high Return on Investment, because they’ll keep sending a site traffic for years. Therefore, it’s easy to get Web article writing jobs, even if you have no experience.
When you’re writing articles for a Web site, remember that each site has a particular audience which it wants to attract. Therefore, you need to write to and for that audience.
Here’s how to get started writing articles for the Web: join an outsourcing site and get article writing jobs. This gives you practice in writing articles. You won’t be paid as much as an experienced writer, but every writing job you do gives you writing credits which will enable you to increase your rates over time.
2. Write Web Content for Businesses
There’s more to Web content than articles. As your skill at writing improves, you can move on to writing other forms of Web content, which are generally more highly paid.
Other forms of content you can write include: entire Web sites, news content, blogs, and Web copywriting.
Here’s a secret. Write content for your own sites to get experience. This shows you what does, and doesn’t work online. If you can boost the traffic and conversions (make sales) on your own sites, you can do it for others too.
3. Write Blogs for Businesses
Many businesses are awake to the traffic potential of blogs. However, most don’t have the skills to develop blogs in-house, so they hire professional bloggers. As with writing Web content, you need to practice your blogging skills on your own blogs first.
Bloggers for large companies are highly paid. However, you do need considerable writing experience to get the highly paid jobs.
So there you have three simple ways in which you can write for money. There has never been a better time to be a writer. You have the potential to make more money writing can you ever could at any day job.

Web Writing — How to Get Started and Make Money
October 16th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedWant to make some quick cash? If you can write, you can make money writing for the Web. There’s a hunger for information online — if you can feed that hunger you’ll be well paid.
Assess Your Skills: What Can YOU Write?
Your first step is to assess your writing skills. What can you write, that Web content buyers will pay for?
If you’re writing marketing collateral in your day job — press releases, product descriptions for catalogs, advertising — these copywriting skills are all transferable to the Web.
Yes, you’ll need to discover how Web copywriting differs from writing copy for print, but you already have basic skills. You just need to get your name out on the Web, and create some initial writing samples, so buyers can see what you can do.
Perhaps you’ve never been paid for your writing skills at all. In that case, you’ll find that building a great Web writing career is easy, if you follow several simple steps.
Here they are.
1. Create a Blog — a Blog Is a Fast-To-Create Web Site
A blog is fast to create and it achieves a vital goal for you: it gets your name out on the Web.
Important tip: use your own name as the title for your blog; don’t make up a name. Your aim is to create a brand: to become known as a Web writer.
Please remember this — it’s vital. In your first few years as a Web writer, you must focus on branding yourself. If you choose a cute or clever title for your blog you’re wasting an opportunity.
2. Post Content to the Blog — Every Post Is a Writing Sample
The more you get your words online, the more buyers you will have. If you skimp on writing, you’ll always be hunting for Web writing jobs, rather than having buyers approach you.
Important tip 2: you have a choice online. You can be a price taker (when you hunt for writing jobs) or you can be a price maker when buyers approach you, and you tell them what your fees are.
3. Advertise Your Writing Services on Your Blog
When you get your “name” blog online, and consistently create content for it, buyers find you. Ensure they know that they can hire you, by mentioning it on your blog posts. Don’t be shy about this — talk about your writing skills and the fact that you’re a writer for hire.

Web writing - it’s all in the title tag
October 10th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedAs a Web writer, you need to learn everything you can about how basic search engine optimization (SEO) works. Most of your clients will be clueless. They’re in the dark ages, still believing the old “keyword density” silliness.
Whenever I write a Web page, I start with writing:
Page Title
Page Description
Keywords
I’ve got a little macro in TextMate (my Mac text editor of choice) which spits them out, ready for me to fill in.
Think of the Page Title and the Page Description as being advertisements for the page. When someone searches, the title and description of the pages show up in the search results. If your title and description are enticing enough, they’ll click.
A tip: your client will want to get his company name in the page title. However, unless the company is well known enough that people will be searching for it by name, this is not a good idea.
10 SEO and Marketing-Friendly Title Tag Formulas | Internet Marketing Strategy: Conversation Marketing recommends:
“[keyword] - [company name]. If you’re a one-product or one-service company, put the keyphrase that’s relevant to that page, then the company name, like this: Buggy Bumpers: Ian’s Buggy Emporium. Use a different phrase on each page! Repeating the same word again and again is a bad idea.”
I recommend you use your own version of my macro. It focuses your mind on the results you want, starting with getting your Web pages found.
