Web writer, stake out your territory now
Thursday, April 5th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedAs more print newspapers and magazines make the push online, it’s time to stake out your territory as a Web writer.
Here’s how to do this. First, you need to understand something of how publications work with their writers - their contributors.
Becoming a publication’s contributor - part of their stable of writers
Your first sale to any publication, whether online or offline, is hardest, because all publications have a stable of writers on whom they rely. It’s difficult to break in and become a part of a publication’s stable of contributors, but not impossible, if you’re persistent, creative and determined. The old saying “it’s who you know, and who knows you” applies here - all publications want to work with writers they know: it’s just easier. They know what to expect, and they’ll pay you more because they know you’re experienced, competent and reliable.
The big benefit of becoming a valued part of a publications stable is that new assignments will be offered to you, first.
You can join any publication’s online stable of writers - prepare now
The big publications’ push online is happening for one reason - advertisers are taking their dollars and spending them online. This means that newspapers and magazines MUST be online, if they want to stay viable.
The move online will come as a shock to many of their contributors, and some of them will refuse to adjust, because writers can become very set in their ways. Partly this is ego, mainly it’s fear.
So, since some of these contributors will refuse to learn new tricks, this is your chance to move in, because you know how to write for the Web.
The rest of 2007 and 2008 will see many (most) offline publications expand their operations online. Get in now, stake out your territory: become established on the Web with your own site and blog, and your experience will count very favorably when publications are looking for Web writers.
