I’ve received several messages about writing ebooks this week, so I might as well answer them here. :-)

There’s a huge market online for ebooks - they sell VERY well, so clever Internet marketers hire writers to write ebooks which they can sell. So you’re never short of ebook-writing gigs.

However, the big money is in creating your own ebooks, which you can market and sell - after you’ve served an apprenticeship writing for others, you’ll know what’s needed, and can become your own ebook publisher.

So let’s answer the most common questions.

Q: How long is an ebook?

A: Ebooks vary in length, from 20 pages (5000 words) to 100 pages (25,000). Ebooks are shorter than print books, because they’re meant to be read on a computer screen.

Q: How much do you get paid?

A: This varies. You should aim to be paid around $600 for a short ebook, and around $1500 for a longer book.

Buyers will tend to squeeze you on price, especially on the out-sourcing sites. The best way to sell your ebook writing services is to set up a small Web site, and promote it. You’ll get more work than you can handle, AND you can set your own price. There are many buyers who want reliable, consistent writers who’ll write one or more ebooks a month.
