Blog commenting for links - relevance and value

If you’re new to Web writing, and blogging, you’ve probably heard that commenting on blogs is a good thing, because it gives you free links.

Some people even use “commenting on blogs and forums” as a marketing strategy. That’s fine, but keep RELEVANCE AND VALUE in mind.

Like most Web publishers, I blacklist splogs (spam blogs) automatically - they’re not hard to spot and are easily eliminated.

In the past few months however there’s been a rise in comment spam which is obviously from people who are new to the Web, and who are trying to do the right thing.

Commenting tips

* Add value when you comment. If you have nothing to add to a conversation or post, don’t comment. Your comment will be deleted, and the blogger will remember you as a possible spammer;

* Make sure your link is relevant. If you’re linking from a shopping blog, link to similar blogs, not to education blogs, for example. Sometimes “relevance” is a judgment call. Ask yourself WHY you’re commenting with a link; if you’re just commenting or sending a trackback for the free link, don’t;

* If you’re going to comment heavily on a related blog, take the time to send a personal email message to the blogger, introducing yourself. Not only is this polite, but you may even get the opportunity to “guest” on another blog.

Biggest tip: spend 80 per cent of your time on your own blog. Content counts, and becomes more valuable over time. It’s easy to waste many hours commenting and posting on forums, with minimal return.
