Want to make a great income as a Web writer? There’s a secret if you want to stay out of the $10-per-article trenches. It’s education - both your own, and your customer’s.

Writing for the Web means understanding the Web, because the more you know, the better the results your customers will get from your writing.

I’ve always said that you don’t need to be “techy” to build a Web site. You don’t. You can put up a Web site (blog) at Blogger in about 60 seconds. No technical expertise required at all. However, if you want to make a good income as a Web writer, you’ll put in a little time discovering the search engines and search engine optimization (SEO) and why “content is king.”

Bluntly stated: if you know more than most of your customers do about what works on the Web, you can charge appropriately.

You won’t learn the ins and outs of content, and how content can boost a Web site’s rankings in the organic search results overnight, and you certainly don’t need to. However, if you’re getting $10 per article, and another Web writer charges $100 per article and is turning away customers because he’s overbooked, there’s a reason - the $100 articles are worth it to the buyer.
